Job Purpose

Works in tandem with the Honors Director of Student Engagement to develop and manage the Honors First-Year Experience curricular program – Beyond George Street (HONS 100) and Honors Engaged (HONS 103 A and 103 B) – for Honors students. Manages the Honors Engaged program and co-supervises approximately 15 student interns who serve as peer mentors for the Honors First-Year Experience program. Teaches the two-semester series of Honors Engaged courses to all first-year Honors students. Responsible for the assessment of the Honors Engaged program. Advises students in the Honors College. Contributes to Honors College programming. Reports to the Director of Student Engagement.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline represented at the College of Charleston and 5+ years of progressively responsible and relevant professional experience in program development and management, preferably in higher education or the non-profit sector. Demonstration of capacity to lead and teach through additional training, coursework, certification, or graduate degree. Candidates should bring significant professional connections to the position resulting from sustained community organizing or experience in social justice and/or victim advocacy. Commitment to sharing theories of justice and equity is essential. Priority will be given to individuals with teaching experience in an honors college or similar program and/or advocacy experience with the 15-25-year-old demographic. Experience in first-year programming and a background in the social sciences is highly desired. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population; working knowledge of computing, i.e. word processing, database management, website/blog/learning management platforms, survey software; ability to identify, develop, and implement goals and activities that benefit the College of Charleston, the Honors College, and the local community; ability to supervise student workers; ability to interact professionally and effectively with students, staff, faculty, and other key stakeholders; ability to effectively guide students in their civic development; ability to support thoughtful academic planning by students; ability to prioritize, to focus on most important obligations, and to multi-task. Must possess independent judgment and initiative and be willing to learn about higher education policies and best practices. Excellent writing, organization, and management skills.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Generally the position is a 37.5-hour per week job; however, must have flexibility to work extra hours on the weekends and evenings to supervise programming activities and to attend key events for the Honors College.

Activity

Administer the Honors Engaged Program as a two-semester civic engagement commitment required of all first-year Honors students. Train and supervise peer mentors assigned to the program in theories and practices of social justice and civic engagement. Develop/update/maintain all curriculum, policies and guidelines for the program. Maintain relationships with community partners on and off campus. Ensure that the Honors Engaged program adheres to all stated policies and achieves project goals. Teach the Honors Engaged courses, HONS 103 A every Fall semester and HONS 103 B every Spring semester. Oversee all Honors FYE course content associated with the Honors Engaged program and serve as lead grader for all artifacts associated with the program. In coordination with Associate Dean, implement all necessary assessments of the program.

Assist in advising student leadership groups, such as the Scholar-Citizen Initiative.

Serve as an integral member of the Honors College team. Attend all staff meetings and retreats. Contribute to strategic planning, budget management, and program development initiatives as directed. Participate in implementation of key events and core activities in the Honors College. Represent the Honors College on campus-wide committees as needed.
