Job Purpose
|
The Director of Public Information plans and manages the College’s public relations and media relations functions within the Office of Marketing and Communications and serves as a member of the Crisis Communications Team. Acts as chief College spokesperson and works directly with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and other senior administrators to develop and disseminate content to members of the media and the public that is consistent with the College’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
Develops and maintains a comprehensive database of local, regional, and national media contacts and proactively and regularly communicates with members of the media to promote positive stories about and coverage of the College, its people and programs. Works with other campus units to plan and implement media events and initiatives and conducts media training for faculty and staff. Directs the development of news releases and media alerts and disseminates as appropriate. Contributes articles and other content to the office’s digital and print publications, including The College Today, Faculty & Staff News, and College of Charleston Magazine. Tracks and reports on all media pitches, mentions and placements using appropriate software tools.

Minimum Requirements
|
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field and a minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in managing a comprehensive media/public relations program. A minimum of 5 years with leadership experience is strongly preferred. Experience in media relations and crisis management, including demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with members of the news media. A portfolio of work samples demonstrating proficiency with journalistic and public relations techniques, including writing and editing. Prior journalism experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
|
Mastery of journalistic and public relations practices and techniques, including strong writing, editing, and proof-reading skills and deep knowledge of AP Style and modern news-gathering practices. Ability to support the planning and production of media relations and public relations events and initiatives. Ability to write press releases, news and feature stories for a variety of digital and print platforms. Ability to cultivate and maintain successful working relationships with media representatives and the public. Ability to work well with others in a team environment under deadline pressure. Strong initiative and ability to complete assignments without close supervision. Understanding of modern strategic communications techniques. Familiarity with emergency notification systems such as Everbridge; media monitoring tools such as Meltwater; student achievement platform Merit Pages; and online publishing platforms such as WordPress.

Additional Comments Regarding Position
|
Some travel and evening and weekend work required to facilitate media inquiries and stewardship at events, and to conduct outreach to regional and national media outlets. The position serves as part of an on-call staff rotation for after-hours campus emergencies and time-sensitive media requests.
