Job Purpose

The Engineering and Computing Systems Specialist supports faculty in managing instructional labs, equipment, computer systems, and software within the School of Engineering, Computing, and Mathematics (SECM) at the College of Charleston. This role includes troubleshooting and repairing electrical and electronic equipment, as well as computer hardware and software. Additional responsibilities involve installing new equipment, procuring supplies, monitoring lab safety/ conducting regular inspections and managing vendor relationships.

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronics, mechatronics, computer engineering or equivalent is required. An Associate Degree in one of the above disciplines, with previous relevant experience will also be considered. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong analytical skills to manage complex, high-volume workloads. Should demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to work under pressure while collaborating effectively in a diverse school environment. Technological expertise is essential, including proficiency with both PC and Apple computers and knowledge of AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Linux, Microsoft systems, file & application servers. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is required, and website development and social media management knowledge is a plus.

Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams. The ability to repair and calibrate various electrical / electronics / computer equipment. Supervisory skills and good oral and written communication are required. Must be proficient with PC and Apple Computers. Knowledge of CAD, Linux, Microsoft, and file & application servers.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

May be required to lift, carry, and/or move heavy electrical / electronic / computer equipment. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required. Reports to the SECM Dean.

Supports SECM faculty with the needs of the instructional labs by troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and provide support for setting up electrical, electronics, and systems engineering labs. Keep an updated inventory of teaching lab equipment and electronic components in order to prevent shortage. Additionally, assist faculty in preparing and updating existing lab manuals. Troubleshoots AV equipment to ensure proper functionality for SECM.

Troubleshoots and resolves complex computer software and hardware issues. Works with clients to gather requirements and researches potential solutions to achieve desired outcomes related to engineering and computer science courses. Researches, designs, installs, and configures systems such as virtual reality hardware and software, cybersecurity honeypots, and high-performance computing setups.  Manages scheduling and maintenance of lecture capture and video-conferencing systems within SECM.

Provides technical expertise to SECM users regarding equipment, software & hardware purchases, and upgrades. Acts as a liaison between SECM and IT to ensure the best technical support experience. Maintains a documented inventory of all equipment and computers within SECM. Prepares technical documentation as needed.

Updates health and safety policies and procedures within SECM labs, ensuring adherence to lab equipment specifications. Provides updates on faculty safety requirements and ensures proper use of instruments.

Analyzes work orders and equipment budget reports and presents and communicates results effectively to faculty members / chairs / dean. Uses this analysis to design preventive maintenance schedules for instrumentation and ensures thorough, up-to-date documentation is maintained for all laboratory equipment. Supervises student workers and keeps the dean and chairs informed about issues related to the technical needs of the school.
