Job Purpose

The Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Facilities and Operations is responsible for overseeing facility management and operation of the Stern Student Center and other venues managed by the Office of Student Involvement, and ensuring that Student Involvement facilities remain clean, safe, properly maintained, functional, and inviting. This position will oversee the Cougar Food Pantry Operations, hiring and training student staff/volunteers. This position works within the framework emphasizing out-of-class learning opportunities for students through extra and co-curricular programs and services with a continuing commitment to social development, education, leadership development, and community building. This position cultivates and maintains close working relationships with various departments within the College of Charleston community, other universities and public agencies, and the public, and may represent Student Involvement in many public facets.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree and facilities operations experience required. Experience in higher education student activities, programs and events required. Excellent customer service skills demonstrating the ability to work effectively with a variety of groups. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Should possess experience and knowledge in the areas of facility maintenance and operations. In addition, applicants should exhibit strong organizational skills as well as the ability to supervise student employees. Must demonstrate the ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. Commitment to providing high levels of customer service is essential. Basic knowledge of audio-visual equipment and computer operations is essential. Must be comfortable with PC Platforms and use Microsoft applications.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Occasional evening and weekend hours required. Must be able to routinely lift 50 lbs.

Manages the daily operations of Student Involvement facilities including ensuring building clients and guests’ needs are met in a timely and consistent manner. Manages all maintenance and repairs for Student Involvement facilities, and serves as departmental co-liaison to Physical Plant, Information Technology, Central Warehouse, and other on-campus departments for maintenance and repair needs. Routinely lifts or moves equipment or other supplies up to 50 lbs. found in Student Involvement facilities.

Activity

Directs the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of Student Staff. Coordinates scheduling of student staff working under the Associate Director of Student Involvement for Events and Operations. Ensures adequate staffing for events outside normal operating hours (late nights and weekends). Manages the contracts and payroll for student staff. Conducts meetings with student staff and assists with topic development and running of monthly full Student involvement student staff meetings. Develops training materials, and manuals for student staff.

Activity

Oversees and manages the Cougar Pantry, the on-campus food pantry for students. Ensures stocking of food and supplies for the pantry. Coordinate food and resources collection campaigns. Coordinates staffing of pantry including volunteer opportunities. Maintain a resource guidebook for volunteers. Plan and program outreach campaigns to market pantry services. Assess the needs of the Cougar Pantry and advertise needs effectively.

Manages technical and logistical set-up process (diagrams, audio visual equipment, sound, staging, furniture, etc.) for confirmed events scheduled through the reservation system in Student Involvement facilities, which during the academic year can average up to 225 events per semester (~15 events per week). Serves as back-up support to the Student Involvement reservation system administrator in the event of their absence, or high demand times of the year. Conducts daily facility inspections and walk-throughs to ensure set-ups are completed, and student staff follow through on assignments and work. Generates and oversees necessary work orders for Student Involvement facilities based on inspection reports. Communicates timeline for work orders to building clients.

Manages and maintains, in cooperation with the Associate Director of Student Involvement for Events and Operations and the Executive Director of Student Involvement, the life cycle plans for building improvements (e.g., furniture, painting, flooring). Directs the priorities and needs of equipment purchases. Recommends development of services and improvements for areas of supervision. Sustains and increases the use of technology (scheduling software, social media, inventory, and tracking, etc.) throughout Student Involvement facilities.
