Job Purpose

The Director will provide strategic and collaborative leadership and vision and is responsible for shaping the Institute’s mission and profile. This position leads the efforts to present all exhibitions and programs in a successful and professional manner. The Director has primary responsibility for all aspects of the Institute’s operation and management, including fiscal and personnel management, as well as for raising funds to support the Institute.

Minimum Requirements

Undergraduate Degree in Art History, Arts Management or Museums Studies. Master’s degree preferred. At least three years of experience in a museum, gallery, or cultural institution managing and curating exhibitions. Professional experience in higher education or non-profit environment preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Background in Art History, Arts Management, or Museums Studies. Previous experience in a supervisory role. Experience with exhibition planning, design, and installation. Experience with the development and implementation of strategic plans. Understanding of standards and best practices for museums, galleries, or similar organizations. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Basic computer knowledge.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Attend events and programs presented by the Halsey Institute. Frequent evening and weekend events.

1. Fosters the institutional vision and artistic direction for the Institute, taking the lead in communicating the Institute’s role as an outstanding visual arts institution, and enhancing its reputation and affiliations as a public art museum regionally and nationally. Oversees all Institute operations, exhibitions, programs, events, and other projects.

2. Serves as the primary ambassador for the Institute. Collaborates with Institute staff and College of Charleston Foundation to identify, engage, cultivate, solicit and steward donors, to build a philanthropic base of support for the Institute.

3. Develops and manages the Institute’s operating budget. Supervises Institute employees and determines staffing. Works closely with Institute Advisory Board. Leads visioning, long-term, and strategic planning to accomplish the Institute’s mission.
