Job Purpose

The Network Engineer is responsible for operations, support, analytical investigation, design, installation and upgrade of the 1000+ device enterprise wired network and 1000+ device enterprise wireless network.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma is required .A bachelor’s degree in information technology systems, computer science, or related field and experience in information technology systems or related area is preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have thorough knowledge of all networks and network standards. Thorough knowledge of OSI model, routers, switches, access points, GNU/Linux operating systems and servers, and other network equipment. Thorough knowledge of telecommunications distribution design. Knowledge of Visio. Proficient project and financial management skills. Proficient network analysis, problem solving, troubleshooting, and customer service skills. Proficient communications skills (both written and oral). Ability to work well with others. Ability to plan, organize, and follow-through with multiple projects simultaneously. Technology certifications are desirable. – Experience with H.264 encoded video delivery over LAN and WAN – Experience with DHCP for LAN and WAN – Experience with Juniper, HP/Aruba, and Palo Alto (desirable) – Experience with Opensource Network Management Application (desirable) – Experience with iptables (desirable) – Experience with tcpdump and Wireshark (desirable) – Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex network issues and recommend solutions for positive outcomes – Knowledge of networking services for AAA, DHCP, BOOTP, DNS, ICMP, SFTP, NTP and SNMP – Familiarity with network testing equipment – 802.1x Security Protocol for port level security – Proficient with Microsoft and Apple applications and operating systems. – Mobile OS’s such as iOS, Android, and others. – Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex RF interference issues and recommend solutions for positive outcomes. – Building-to-building wireless designs and implementations – Wireless security protocols (WPA2 Enterprise, 802.1x, etc) – Proficient wireless network architectural design, analysis, problem solving, troubleshooting, and customer service skills.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Employee must be willing to occasionally work flexible hours, respond to 24/7 outage alerts, and carry a College cell phone. Must be able to occasionally climb and crawl into network locations including roofs, attics, and basements. Must be able to carry network equipment. Must be able to drive around campus and to remote sites.

1) NETWORK EQUIPMENT, SERVERS, OPERATING SYSTEMS, SECURITY CONFIGURATIONS & SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION: -Installs, configures, tests, and maintains enterprise network equipment including core, distribution routers, access switches, wireless access points, wireless controllers, and network appliances utilizing industry best practices used for data, telephone, audio/video, broadcasting, environmental, and secure networks. -Maintains network management servers and operating systems. -Makes network configuration recommendations. -Enhances network functionality as necessary with custom scripts and programming. -Manages campus network device security certificates. -Implements, monitors, and documents firewall rule sets and access list restrictions. -Maintains TCP/IP addressing and automated inventory procedures. -Designs, documents, and maintains wired and wireless authentication, authorization and access policies, procedures, and configurations. -Ensures device configurations and access to device configurations are both secure and follow industry and manufacturer best practice.

2) CAMPUS NETWORK HARDWARE REPLACEMENT PROJECT AND CAPITAL PROJECTS: -Serves as the technical advisor in the ongoing multi-year campus network hardware replacement project. -Assures project milestones and deadlines are met. -Serves on project teams. -Collaborates with peers, IT personnel, students, faculty, staff, and team members to ensure success of project. -Conducts post-installation evaluation and remediation. -Writes purchasing specifications for hardware and services needed for the project. -Acquires quotes and options from vendors and manufacturers. -Provides detailed planning and documentation of network designs that include but are not limited to detailed equipment room surveys, wireless surveys, predictive wireless designs, theoretical, conceptual and logical drawings, project charters, Gantt charts, etc. -Provides status reports and project communications to Manager.

3) NETWORK SUPPORT & ANALYSIS: -Serves as wireless and wired network expert and systems administrator for complex campus networks. -Provides Tier-two support to IT Server Support Analysts, Helpdesk Technicians, Classroom Technicians, and other IT personnel. -Evaluates and resolves critical campus-wide outages expediently. -Troubleshoots and supports network equipment, management servers, operating systems, and software. -Maintains network equipment racks in 150+ equipment rooms. -Tracks inventory changes and assists with annual physical inventory of 2000+ assets. -Creates complex Visio drawings and near real time full drawings of logical network infrastructure and status. -Maintains organized and detailed network documentation. -Backs up and documents new/modified network configurations, hardware, and software. -Responsible for Capacity and frequency planning and design. -Assists peers with other network and security operations as assigned. -Provides other Network and Security duties as assigned
