Description You will serve as a MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (VARIOUS SPECIALTIES) in the Department of Navy, Naval Medical Command.

This announcement uses the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

This public notice is to gather applications that may or may not result in a referral or selection.

  • Current and active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Registered Medical Assistant certification (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Certified Medical Assistant certification (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or certification from the Armed Forces of the United States trained medical assistants who have completed medical service training that provides clinical proficiency in these necessary scope of knowledge and clinical skills.
Failure to possess the SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR WILL result in an ineligible rating; the factor(s) must be verifiable with submission of a copy of the certification with your application.

For the GS-0645-04: GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience which is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation needed to perform the duties of the GS-04 position AND at least six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Applying Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. For the GS-0640-05, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Conducting test to identify a variety of commonly encountered or expected pathogenic bacteria and fungi for identification to genus and species; Selecting methods for obtaining pure cultures of suspected pathogens found on preliminary culture; Selecting basic tests to be used and determines need for additional tests to furnish positive identification; AND Writing report of findings and submits to supervisor. For the GS-0640-06, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Performing specimen collection and processing duties; Receiving specimens collected outside the lab and ensures appropriateness for tests required; AND Receiving orders, accessions, and prioritizes laboratory test requests.

For the GS-0640-07, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Performing a variety of laboratory tests and examinations which are difficult and complex; Completing tests using standard operating procedures or detailed instructions and guidelines; AND Preparing reports of findings. For the GS-0640-08, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Performing difficult and complex laboratory tests and examinations for which procedures and instructions have not been standardized locally; Utilizing instrumentation elaborate/complex, very fine settings and measurements; AND working with pathologists, other physicians, and with patients. For the GS-0640-09, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Working as a lead medical technician; Identifying, distributing and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and/or job specialization; Making adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned tasks; Training or arranging for the training of employees in the section for specific tasks or job techniques and makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies; Reviewing/processing a variety of standardized medical laboratory tests and procedures, many of which are complex and require numerous steps; AND Working with physicians, nurses and other health care providers (HCP's) to facilitate appropriate test ordering practices; Works with other laboratory professionals to properly process specimens for shipment to reference laboratories. For the GS-0640-11, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Performing complex and newer tests including highly specialized procedures which demand highly advanced technical competence and insight in the field of medical laboratory sciences, [(a) Bacteriology: Performing initial preparation and inoculation procedures of specimens for bacterial, parasitic and fungi organisms. Performing gram stain analysis of various fluids obtained from patients. (b) Chemistry: Performing various chemical examinations for testing chemical components in blood, urine, plasma, serum and other body fluids, determining qualitative and quantitative chemistry; Preparing standardized reagents used for chemical procedures; calibrates and maintains laboratory instruments such as; Kodak DT 60, Coleman spectrophotometer and centrifuges. (c) Serology: Performing serological tests and procedures for detection of the presence of specific antibodies in blood. (d) Hematology/Urinalysis: Performing hematological procedures on whole blood, semen and urine. Performs manual differentials and cellular counts. Performs microscopic examination of urine sediments.]
