Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have their Ph.D. in hand by August 2025 and must have completed their Ph.D. no earlier than 2020. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Applicants’ work will focus on oral histories of the Holocaust, the legacies of genocide and mass violence, or the generational transition of trauma and memory.
2. Experience with and expressed interest in collecting oral history recordings, and specifically with descendants of Holocaust survivors.
3. Reside in Charleston and work out of the Jewish Studies Center for the duration of the fellowship.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

The selected fellow will deliver at least one public lecture highlighting their own research (and another the following year, if renewed for a second year). In addition to an annual salary of $55,000, the Goldberg Fellow will receive a modest support budget, provision for the assistance of a student intern, and access to the resources and support offered by the Jewish Studies Program and the College.

The Fellow will devote the greater share of their time at the College to facilitating a new project collecting oral history recordings with the descendants of Holocaust survivors, and to teaching one course per semester that complements our fall introductory Holocaust history class. In the remaining time, the Fellow will work on developing their own research.
