Job Purpose

The Substance Use Prevention Coordinator under the supervision of the Director of the Office of Student Wellness and Well-being is responsible for developing, coordinating, and evaluating substance misuse prevention programs/initiatives for the College of Charleston student, staff and faculty community. The position will improve the existing substance misuse prevention offerings on the campus, assess their impact, and assist with campus reports related to alcohol and drug misuse.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in health promotion, health education, public health, social work, psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university. Experience: One (1) year of experience related to the duties described. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have excellent communication and time management skills, ability to work independently, establish relationships and function within a team.
  • Must be able to add to a welcoming and inclusive environment and interact with individuals from a variety of backgrounds with a helpful, caring attitude.
  • Must be willing to speak in front of large and small groups.
  • Knowledge of public health theories and strategies for alcohol and substance use prevention and related disciplines.
  • Ability to train, schedule, and provide guidance to student interns, volunteers, and/or student employees.
  • Ability to identify, develop and implement programs and activities that will benefit the campus community.
  • Ability to work independently as well as establish relationships and function within a team
  • Willingness to learn as well as flexibility and adaptability to ever-changing situations.
  • Basic understanding of social media is desired.
  • Knowledge of student issues in higher education, FERPA regulations and student development.

Additional Comments Regarding Position

Periodic evening and weekend availability may be required.

Including assisting in the development, implementation, and assessment of departmental goals and objectives and serving as the point person to complete the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Biennial Report and other AOD reports as needed.

Responsible for the overall implementation and administration of the online educational modules for admitted incoming students regarding alcohol and marijuana use, and sexual misconduct and bystander intervention techniques.

Assists Director with substance use surveying, reporting and creation of social awareness campaigns for the college community either through working with faculty or implementing a survey designed to survey student health like ACHA-NCHA.

Chairs the AOD subcommittee/committee and collaborates on programming and policy development with on-campus departments like Collegiate Recovery, the Counseling Center, and the Dean of Students and off-campus community agencies like Charleston Center, and FAVOR voices of recovery.
